When a loved one passes away there are so many things left behind; love, memories, belongings. As much as it is nice to have some tangible things to hold on to there comes a time when we may have to make some decisions on what to let go of.
One of our clients lost her husband who had a huge silk tie collection. A lifetime of ties is a giant pile.

At what point does holding on to the belongings of a loved one take up so much room that it becomes hoarding? That is a very personal decision for someone to make.
The Downsizers encounter these delicate situations with our clients everyday. We work with our clients to help them decide what is special enough to hold on to and what they need to let go of.
In the situation with the ties we helped the client decide which ties she wanted to keep by following a criteria
~ties worn at some very special occasions
~fun ties that reminded her of her husband’s interests and sense of humor
~we found a special box and agreed that we would only keep what could fit nicely in that special box
